This school was started in 1930 as a Girls' Primary School of Udupi Nagar Sabha. In the following years, admission was extended to boys as well. The High School started functioning in 1963 and has completed its 50th Golden Jubilee and entered its 63rd year. Both these schools were handed over to the Department of Public Education, Government of Karnataka in 1971. At present, they are managed under the supervision of Panchayat Raj institutions, Udupi Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat.
In the year 2007-08, as per the innovative scheme of the government, both the Primary and High Schools located in the same premises were administratively considered as one school and named as Government Composite High School. It is popularly known as “South School” among the public.
There are 3 sections of Nali-Kali classes in the Primary section. There are 2 sections in Class 1, 2 sections in Class 2, 2 sections in Class 3, 3 sections in Class 4, 2 sections in Class 5, 2 sections in Class 6 and 1 section in Class 7. There is one section each of Kannada Medium and three sections in English Medium from class 8 to 10. (Sanction was given to the English medium section in 1998). To improve the English language proficiency of the students, programs such as supplying two English dailies to each class and organizing English speaking Classes are being organized.
Admission is open from class 1 to 10. English Medium education starts from class 1.
Free education for all students from 1st to 8th class. Fee exemption for female students from 8th to 10th class. Minimum fee is being charged for students. Scholarships are being provided to eligible students from various Government Departments and various Organizations. It is worth mentioning that alumni and donors are cooperating in the education of children
Started by ‘Yaksha Shikshan Trust (R.) Udupi’ since 2007, Yakshagana learning has been progressing systematically under the guidance of Sri Gundmi Sadananda Aital and Sri Ratnakar Shenoy. Every year, more than 70 students participate and perform not only at the school annual function but also at the Rajangana of Sri Krishna Math, earning public acclaim.
Donors have given about ₹2.5 lakh rupees to more than 35 endowment funds, and prizes are given out every year at the Annual Day with the interest earned.
These school papers are printed and available to students free of charge, containing annual activities report of the School.
A branch of Bharat Seva Dal founded by Dr. Na. Su. Hardikar is active in the Primary Section of our school. It is constantly winning awards in the March-past parade of National Festivals held at the district level. In the high school section, a 100-cadet N.C.C. unit of the Navy has been started in the year 2007-08. National Service Scheme - Extra-curricular activities are conducted for the students at the High School level with the aim of personality development and service along with education.
A home visit scheme is being implemented in the school to provide after-school support to students who are lagging in their studies in a friendly environment and to motivate them to develop their abilities. Parents are requested to note the basic idea of remedial teaching and cooperate in the success of the programme.
Under the principle of self-paced, self-learning and enjoyable learning, the Nali-Kali education system is being imparted to students up to the third standard by trained teachers.
Students enrolled in class 8 have the option to choose a language combination of Kannada-English-Hindi or Sanskrit-Kannada-English. English is taught in the school from Class 1 itself. From the year 2014-15, a book called English through Kannada is being distributed free of cost to Class 8 students with the help of donors.
In the High School section, the ambitious project “Mahithi Sindhu” of the Karnataka Government has been transformed into the TALP project and computer education is being provided. At present, computer education is being provided through 48 computers donated by various donors. Apart from LCP, Laptop, UPS, special facilities are available for students in the ‘Sudisha’ audio-visual room with more than 300 educational CDs. Atal Tinkering Lab is functioning, and students are achieving self-learning through experiments
Students participate in various competitions of Pratibha Karanji and are also being prepared and invited to participate in competitions organized by various organizations. Science Fair and Art Fair are conducted in the primary section.
There is an enthusiasm for learning sports, exercise, and yoga. Special training is being provided to students for sports events organized by the department and various associations. Physical education has been considered as a subject since 2012
A large wall board has been installed in the school. Free space has been provided for the students to express themselves in various ways. An annual magazine (Mumbelaku in the High School section and Chiguru in the Primary Section) is being prepared by selecting the stories, poems and articles published here. The Mumbelaku magazine, which is run by the Children's Literature Association, has won awards for 3 consecutive years.
The best scheme of the government, Akshara Dasoha Karyakrama (Midday Hot Meal), is being implemented in our school. With the help of Government Grants and Donors, a well-equipped kitchen has been built. Since 2013, Milk and Ragi Malt are being distributed to children under the Ksheera Bhagya scheme. From 2022, Eggs, Bananas or Peanut Chikkis are being distributed to children from classes 1 to 8
An innovative program is being implemented under the leadership of Mrs. Usha Pai of Manipal Foundation to provide Math, Science and English lessons to students of 9th and 10th standard of selected High Schools under the Group Education Project. Interested students have a unique opportunity to watch the live broadcast of these lessons through the internet and interact with the teachers. A studio is being set up in our institution for Kannada medium and English medium students and lessons in Math, Science and English are being conducted. These lessons are being broadcast live to selected schools in various districts.
Under this Government Scheme, free textbooks, stationery and shoes are being distributed to all students.
